My sheep know my voice, I know them, they follow Me.
I hear others talk about what God has said to them all the time and here I am stuck battling with the belief if God even speaks to me at all ...
Does this sound like you? Knowing the voice of God has the power to change your life. It's the relation between knowing God and walking with God. The bible we read everyday clearly illustrates that those who knew Him walked with Him.
I'm sure you've heard time and time again that God seeks to do wonderful things for you, that God loves you, and that He wants to help you get through this thing called life. Well, all of this is true. However, it can be pretty hard to believe if you haven't heard this from God yourself!
Luckily, that's what this post is about! It's going to reveal to you how God is speaking and show you how our ability to hear and the way we process what we hear affects our ability to discern God's voice.
First, I'd like to know, do you BELIEVE you can hear from God? Find out why this matters below!
To hear God we must believe we not only HEAR His voice but we KNOW His voice. How do we know this to be true? Because He said so Himself in John 10:27. Studies show that sheep do not have great vision but they have excellent hearing. God comparing you and I to sheep should reinstate the belief that due to our spiritual genetics we have an inward ability and gifting to hear Him - for we are one with Jesus Christ.
Sheep live close to their Shepherd and respond only to the voice of their Shepherd - though they can't see their Shepherd well (for we have never seen God). We as God's sheep are to depend on Him and follow His voice. We follow Him because we know Him. John 8:47 tells us that because we belong to God we hear God. This is a sure statement.
Therefore, because God intended for you and I to live by not only His written word but His relational word we must believe this. We hear God because we have His Spirit dwelling within us and as the scriptures say the spirit which we carry (The Holy Spirit) doesn't speak on His own authority but He speaks only what He hears and sees the Father doing as Jesus did. The key here is that the scripture points out that He speaks and that He speaks to you and me. In the same way we are to live our lives even as Jesus did (1 John 2:6) - living not off bread alone but every word that comes from God's mouth (Matthew 4:4).
Therefore, we the sheep of His pasture, know His voice, He knows us, and we follow Him. The confusion isn't found in if we CAN hear God, because scripture says we can. The problem isn't in if God speaks, because the scriptures tell us He does. The issue stems from our inability to recognize God's voice and interpret the message He's trying to convey because we aren't familiar with His language.
